Border Princes: Turn 13

After weeks of planning, the Barrow Legion strikes at the Gnawing Doom, charging into their forces in the forest outside Malko and in the Blood River Bogs. Once again, the Crimson Host and Covenant of Blood battle in the Crossroads!

The Covenant of Blood continued their push north, emboldened by their victory over the Dark Elves and keeping their forces from taking Tor Anok. The army occupying the tower retreated in the face of overwhelming numbers, no doubt waiting for reinforcements before engaging. The warriors of Chaos struck at the Crimson Host's reinforcements as they marched back to the Crossroads!

The Gnawing Hunger repositioned their forces, holding the riverbanks and mounting an incursion into Chaos territory now that the Covenant's focus is to the north. This left a hole in their lines for the Barrow Legion to exploit, however...

The Crimson Host of Maltherion mustered all of their forces to retake Tor Anok and defend against the approaching ravening hordes of Chaos. The tower of Tor Anok was recaptured as the ransackers were pursued. Once again, their forces met the agents of Chaos on the battlefield where the Old Silk and South Roads meet.

The Barrow Legion's patience paid off. With the Gnawing Hunger abandoning the Blood River Bogs, there was finally a hole in their lines. The ratmen outside of Malko were surrounded and the advantage of their fortifications was minimized. The banner that attacked the Skaven this turn receives support from my banners in Malko and the bogs. The Skaven have their fortification and one supporting banner, putting us both at 1800 points for the battle.

Once again, the Crimson Host and Covenant of Blood battle to a standstill at the Crossroads. The forces of Chaos retreat to the south, while the Dark Elves retreat to the South Road; no doubt keenly aware of the threat posed by the Barrow Legion forces moving through the mountains.

Tired of sitting on his throne in Malko, the Ghoul King Marrowflayer left his fortress to lead the forces of the Barrow Legion into the battle to control the surrounding forest. The combined might of necromancy and flying beasts kept the Gnawing Hunger from taking much ground early in the battle. Marrowflayer and the zombie dragon took positions in the trees, ready to pounce on any Skaven foolish enough to advance. The Skaven approached cautiously, firing their ratling guns into skeletal hounds and readying their Doom Wheels to crush any who approached. The cunning of the ratmen general then made itself clear, as hordes of rats and a mighty lord on a stitched beast emerged from tunnels below the battlefield in flanking positions despite the wards the Legion had employed!

The Gnawing Hunger felt the shift in momentum and struck. Doom Wheels shattered skeletons to bits on one flank as their general charged into the side of the zombie dragon on the other. The Legion's necromancers responded, raising zombies to halt the advancing tide of rats and to hasten their monsters. Dire wolves rushed behind the Skaven lines and tore apart their only wizard, securing a key advantage over the battlefield. In a desperate bid to halt the turning tide, the zombie dragon was commanded forward into the rat ogres, devouring most of the unit and forcing the Skaven to defend their remote position.

The swarm of rats had grown and devoured the summoned zombies, forcing Marrowflayer to reinforce the failing flank. He and his bat dragon mount slammed into the ground, crushing hundreds of rats before being enveloped in a tide of rodents. The Grave Guard marched forward and guided the Barrow Legion's troops into more strategic positions from the center of the battlefield. Though it had suffered great damage, the zombie dragon tore into the formation of plague monks and routed them, securing most of the battlefield. Marrowflayer took to the air, now gorged on rat corpses. Knowing that flank had fallen as well, the ratmen general ordered a retreat.

The Barrow Legion, Gnawing Hunger, and Covenant of Blood find some of their armies in precarious positions. With such a complex web of interactions, it is going to be a challenge to anticipate how our enemies will proceed.
