Border Princes: Turns 15, 16, and 17

Last installment, I said that we were surely about to witness the bloodiest and most violent turns yet. By now, I should know better than to predict what my enemies will try to do. Hope you are all Bennie Hill fans.

The Covenant of Blood pushed north to defend their holdings as the campaign season draws to a close. The intentions of the Barrow Legion were clear to the Khorne worshippers and they withdrew to a defensive position in the fortified town of Aldium as reinforcements approached.

The Gnawing Hunger's insurgent force fled into the woods from the forces of undeath. To the west, they marched into Chaos territory, taking advantage of the confusion introduced by the Barrow Legion. Their forces on the border with the Legion held their watch to protect their fortress.

The Crimson Host of Maltherion marched forward from deep in their holdings to defend their territory.

The Barrow Legion's northern-most banner, having been slowed previously by the mountainous terrain, opted to march south rather than face a horde of Dark Elves with no reinforcements. The Legion pursued the Skaven roaming within their borders as well as the Covenant of Blood but neither were able to be pinned down. Knowing the sentries defending the Gnawing Hunger's fortress were unlikely to abandon their posts, the eastern-most army marched north to capture more territory.

There were no combats and we immediately advanced to turn 16.

The Covenant of Blood reclaimed the territory the Barrow Legion stole and consolidated their forces in anticipation of coming battles along their border with the Dark Elves and by their fortress with the Skaven.

In a display of either insanity or brilliance, the rogue army in the Barrow Legion's territory outmaneuvered 3 armies of the undead! (It has been weeks and I am still thinking about this! FUCKIN RATS!) Their banner on the edge of Chaos territory continued to eat away at their holdings.

The Crimson Host of Maltherion converged upon the crossroads and fortified in the west. Their intentions cannot be discerned. A siege of Malko? Open war with the Covenant of Blood?

The Barrow Legion drew their forces to the forests surrounding Malko to trap the elusive forces of the Gnawing Hunger. Despite the carefully laid plans of the venerable necromancers, they failed. Perhaps their folly was not thinking as if they were filthy, grime-encrusted illiterate vermin!!! The remainder of their forces, including a newly created banner, marched towards the center of the Border Princes to defend their gains.

Again, no combats and we advanced to turn 17.

The Covenant of Blood shuffled their forces, preparing for assaults on two fronts. The Dark Elves closed in as the Skaven struck their fortress!

The Gnawing Hunger made a bold attack upon the forces of Chaos in their foul citadel! The worshippers of Khorne will have 150 point bonus due to their fortifications. The Skaven who had so far done so well eluding the undead attempted to flee to the Blood River Bogs but were impaired by the swampy terrain and forced into battle against an overwhelming force.

The Crimson Host of Maltherion split their forces, readying themselves to battle the assembling battalions of the Barrow Legion and to advance their gains against the Crimson Host.

The necromancers of the Barrow Legion do not enjoy being made to look as fools. They mustered nearly the entire Legion to demonstrate their displeasure upon the disgusting Ratmen who had roamed their territory. The Barrow Legion have an additional 450 points for this battle. Their other banners pushed to the front lines against the Dark Elves in preparation for a number of potential battles.

The Covenant of Blood and Gnawing Hunger battled at the Chaos capital and drew. The fear of Ratmen spread as they managed to mostly overcome a 150 point deficit with their speed and heavy hitters.

The Barrow Legion overwhelmed the Skaven as they battled for control of the riverbank. Weight of numbers and multiple units that did not care about the watery terrain gave the undead an insurmountable advantage. The Gnawing Hunger's forces were massacred.

It was my first game trying things from the new Ghostly Undead list and they feel really great. Their new Ethereal rule gives them a 6" teleport that counts against their total movement rather than Strider. It often felt like a sidegrade, but there are situations were you can make some unintuitive charges or threaten a flank charge in the open. The unit I took had a once per game +2 to hit upgrade which makes their Q5+ more manageable as you know you'll have one reliable attack out of them at least.

The Covenant of Blood and Gnawing Hunger each had to retreat from the Chaos capital. The Skaven lost a critical piece of territory in their loss to the Barrow Legion, putting them at 11 territories controlled. This is not enough to support more than 3 banners so the massacred army is lost. That exchange in land was enough to allow yet another Barrow Legion banner to spawn.

It doesn't look like the Crimson Host or Barrow Legion are content to sit on their gains and will fight until the last turn!
